Always A Family Business
Kytons was started by the Hignett family to supply their family’s café in 1938 and has had several reinventions over the decades – a stall in the Adelaide Central Market for 40 years, Adelaide’s premier fundraising bakery and has now grown into an iconic SA brand, with products available across the state (and beyond).
The business has been sold twice in its 85+ year history, each time to a family friend. Current owners Darren and Sharon Sutton bought the business in 2003 and have expanded and grown the business substantially – including opening a new retail space at Kytons Edwardstown bakehouse site in 2025.
1938: Starts as Avon Catering
Kytons Bakery Australia started in 1938 when the Hignett brothers launched Avon Catering. Within a few years, the name was changed to Kytons Kakes – the “Kytons” was simply a made up name – the brothers had wanted something that started with “K” and that’s what they thought of! Kytons sold to the Darwins in 1975.
1945: Adelaide Central Market
Kytons bakehouse was in Penny Place in the city but then Kytons took up a stall in the Adelaide Central Market in the mid 1940s.
1950s: Carrington Street
In the 1950s, Kytons moved from Penny Place to Carrington Street and then again to Ashford in the 1980s.
2003: Darren and Sharon
Darren and Sharon took over and moved the bakery to Edwardstown where it is still located.
2010: Larry Arrives
In 2010, Larry lamington, our six-foot tall mascot made his debut. He’s usually hanging out in our retail space in Edwardstown, but he appears at various events throughout the year including the Royal Adelaide Show and Boo at the Zoo.
2017: New Branding
In 2017, we said goodbye to the Kytons kite and welcomed in a new, cleaner logo.
2025: Expansion Again
2025 was when we took over the building next door and doubled in size. Our retail space moved into the new building and was greatly improved.
