Building the “New” Kytons (or expanding next door!)

After 22 years in one half of the building it occupies in Edwardstown, Kytons Bakery has expanded into the other half of the building as well – doubling our footprint and giving Kytons the space to create a wonderful new retail space as well as expand its baking capacity and storage areas.

In 2003 Kytons was taken over by current owners Darren and Sharon Sutton and moved from Ashford, where it had outgrown it’s home of more than 20years, to a larger bakehouse in Edwardstown.

21 year on in 2024, Kytons had grown a lot and had been short on space for a couple of years – the staff were sharing offices, there was not enough storage and the bakehouse wasn’t running as efficiently as it could. So, when the opportunity arose to take over the other half of the building (no.17 Lindsay Ave) it was a chance to set the business up for future growth.

The front of No.17 had been a large showroom, surrounded by offices, for a disability equipment company, so it was the perfect space to create a new shop area and for staff to move into bigger offices. Having been a showroom, the front of No.17 had big floor to ceiling front windows and even an automatic sliding door.

We started by ripping up the old carpet and grinding the concrete back to get a clean, industrial feel for the new shop.

The walls were painted a crisp white, but with a bright, Kytons pink, feature wall.

We built a wall through the middle of the old showroom to create a large retail space at the front of the building and a large packing area behind the wall (two and half times the size of our old packing room) and created a new large counter area for displaying products and serving customers.

In the retail space we not only wanted to give our customers more space to browse and purchase Kytons delicious and award winning products, but we also wanted to be able to tell some of Kytons 85+ years of history.

Three giant boards greet customers as they enter our new shop – telling the stories of  Kytons’ history, Kytons awards and Kytons involvement in the SA community through our community fundraising program and sponsorships. A TV in the corner displays Kytons origin story and of course Larry the Lamington takes pride of place in the shop too.

At the back of No.17 is a giant warehouse space allowing every ingredient and all of our packaging to have its own dedicated space as well as a new larger staff room. Our administrative and marketing staff are enjoying their new spacious offices and the whole of the original side of the building is now dedicated to production, giving our baking staff more room to work and space to continue to grow.

With the assistance of a grant from Marion Council, we replaced the side fence out the front of the building and had a stunning new mural installed (designed and painted by local artist Lucinda Penn). This not only provides a bright pop of colour to our carpark, but in the sunnier months will provide a backdrop for an outside eating area for customers.

Fitting out a new building took and of course had its challenges, but in April 2025 we proudly opened our new shop and started a new era for Kytons Bakery.
