South Australia has once again secured the coveted national title of Best Hot Cross Buns in Australia, from the competition’s host state of Victoria.
Kytons Bakery was awarded first prize at the prestigious EOI & Oostra Spices Easter in the Fruit Bowl Championships, held in Shepparton this weekend (February 20-21)
Baking Industry of Victoria’s Chief Executive, Garry Higgins, said a major aim of Easter in the Fruit Bowl was to promote the use of Australian regional produce.
The event draws bakers and food producers from all over Australia, with entrants from large manufacturers to independent bakeries presenting their product.
Kytons’ growing reputation
This latest win for Kytons’ proprietors, Darren and Sharon Sutton, builds on their bakery’s growing culinary reputation, having taken out first prize for Australia’s Best Lamingtons at the Melbourne Fine Foods National Baking Competition for 2008 and 2009.
Darren said as a small family run business, winning the award for Australia’s Best Hot Cross Buns was particularly sweet.
“To win top spot from so many very worthy competitors is tremendous and somewhat humbling,” he said. “But with South Australia now having won it for the second year running, we must be doing something right in this state.”
Asked for his recipe for success, Darren is not giving too much away, except to say “We bake our products using time proven recipes using only the finest ingredients.
All fruit and flour used in Kytons hot cross buns is Australian grown which guarantees freshness and flavor as well as supporting our farmers”
